
The Arole Oduduwa and paramount ruler of the Ife Kingdom, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, hosted the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Ambassador Michael Freeman, at the Ile Oodua Palace on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Welcoming the distinguished envoy and his entourage, Her Majesty, Olori Aderonke Ogunwusi, expressed her delight at the visit, emphasizing its significance in fostering cultural ties.
“It is a great honor to have Ambassador Michael Freeman experience the rich history and traditions of our race firsthand,” He remarked.
In his address, Ambassador Freeman conveyed his admiration for Yoruba culture, stating,
“Being here today is an extraordinary privilege. The depth of your culture and traditions is truly incredible and awe-inspiring.”
Explaining the purpose of his visit, Ambassador Freeman informed the Ooni that he was leading his delegation to invite His Majesty to Israel. He emphasized his strong belief in the potential for collaboration between Israel and Ile-Ife, particularly in areas that could strengthen bilateral relations.
“As an ambassador, I see many opportunities for partnership between Israel and Ile-Ife. There are numerous areas where we can work together to deepen our relationship,” he stated.
As a token of appreciation, Ambassador Freeman presented Ooni Ogunwusi with a symbolic horn flute, historically known as an instrument that signifies the arrival of dawn and nightfall.

Responding warmly, Arole Oduduwa Olofin Adimula Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II expressed gratitude for the ambassador’s visit, acknowledging the challenges of travel due to the state of the roads. He commended the Ambassador’s commitment to strengthening the age-long relationship relationship between the Jewish and Yoruba people
“I sincerely appreciate your journey to Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilization, from which migration to all corners of the world began. Your humility, simplicity, and commitment to strengthening our relationship are deeply valued,” he said.

The Ooni highlighted the long-standing ties between his predecessors and the State of Israel, appreciating Ambassador Freeman’s efforts in maintaining and advancing this relationship.
“In business, agriculture, tourism, and tradition, Ile-Ife has much to offer in fostering collaboration with your country. For this reason, I wholeheartedly accept your invitation to visit Israel,” he affirmed.

The visit concluded with a presentation of historic artworks to the ambassador, followed by a vibrant cultural display featuring traditional drumming and Yoruba chants, celebrating the deep cultural heritage shared during the memorable occasion.
